Universals and variation in spatial language and cognition: Evidence from Chichewa
نویسندگان
چکیده
The relation of spatial language and spatial cognition is central to the debate over language and thought. Recent findings move this debate beyond the standard opposition between universalist and relativist (Whorfian) stances. Two such studies suggest that spatial language (Khetarpal et al., 2009) and the spatial cognition underlying it (Khetarpal et al., 2010) both reflect universal tendencies of spatial cognition modulated by linguistic convention. These studies gauged non-linguistic spatial cognition through Englishand Dutch-speakers’ pile-sorting of spatial scenes by similarity. Since English and Dutch are closely related, we tested the generality of these findings with pile-sorting from speakers of Chichewa, a Bantu language of East Africa. We found that (1) the spatial systems of 9 unrelated languages near-optimally partition a similarity space derived from Chichewa sorting, and (2) this sorting reflects the semantic system of Chichewa itself, suggesting that Chichewa speakers’ sorting combines universal and language-specific aspects of spatial cognition.

Grounding spatial language in non-linguistic cognition: Evidence for universal and relative spatial semantics in thought
The categories named by spatial terms vary considerably across languages. It is often proposed that underlying this variation is a universal set of primitive spatial concepts that are combined differently in different languages. Despite the inherently cognitive assumptions of this proposal, such spatial primitives have generally been inferred in a top-down manner from linguistic data. Here we s...
متن کاملDemonstratives, Frames of Reference, and Semantic Universals of Space
There is a large body of research indicating that speakers of (familiar) European languages tend to encode and conceptualize space from an egocentric perspective, but linguistic fieldworkers have shown that speakers of certain other languages (e.g. Tzeltal) often describe the same spatial scenes based on fixed coordinates of the environment. This has led some researcher to challenge longstandin...
متن کاملThe universal psychology of kinship: evidence from language.
Kinship is central to social organization in many societies; how people think about kinship should be relevant to social cognition generally. One window onto the mental representation of kinship is afforded by variation and universals in terms for kin. Kin terminologies are commonly organized around binary distinctive features, and terms for some types of kin are consistently linguistically mar...
متن کاملOn the Necessity of an Interdisciplinary Approach to Language Universals
There is considerable variation across the languages of the world, nonetheless it is possible to discern common patterns in how languages are structured and used. The underlying source of this variation as well as the nature of crosslinguistic universals is the focus of much debate across different areas of linguistics. Some linguists suggest that language universals derive from the inner worki...

The question, Do men and women use language differently played a central part in the emergence of feminist socio linguistics more than two decades ago, and it casts a long shadow. This paper focuses on the literature that has contributed to the understanding of the major research questions underlying two major strands, language and gender, concentrating on the development of the literature from...
